Raison d'ĂȘtre

We are a group of local people exploring how we, as a community, can respond to the environmental, economic and social challenges arising from climate change, resource depletion, and an economy based on growth at all costs.

The Transition Harbour group was launched at the Making a Graceful Transition workshop on March 28, 2009, which was organised by Christine Dann on behalf of the Diamond Harbour Community Association, and facilitated by Margaret Jefferies, chair of Project Lyttelton.

There is a genuine awareness in the communities on the south side of the harbour (from Charteris Bay through to Pt Levy) that our idyllic corner of the world is not immune from serious global and local problems such as pollution, degradation of the environment, looming energy shortages, economic stress and social disruption.

Like a growing number of community-based initiatives worldwide (check out the links) our goal is to take the lead in finding local solutions to global problems, rather than waiting for governments (central or local) to find the right answers (or impose the wrong ones).

The Chicken & Egg Festival and Barndance has been postponed until next year!

It was decided instead, in the aftermath of the earthquake, to stage a Post-Quake Pick-me-up & Barndance on November 7, which is a combined event with the Purau Long Lunch and Christchurch Neighbourhood Week.

Bantam of the Opera will be playing.
